Spring-Cleaning Tips To Help Rid Your Home Of Dust And Allergens

Posted on: 19 April 2018

The air inside your home needs to remain as clean and allergen-free as possible to ensure the best health of you and your family members. When indoor pets add to the debris of your home's interior air, the smells, debris, and pet hair can build up. Here are some tips to help you clean your home's interior air.

Clean Your HVAC System

The ventilation of your home's air relies on the cleanliness of the air circulation created by your home's HVAC air ducts, including the cold air intake return vents and the outflow vents. When these areas become dirty and full of dust and debris, these particles will continue to circulate throughout your home. You can vacuum your carpets and use a dust rag and mop to pick up dust from areas of your home, but dust will remain in your ventilation unit and the air of your home as long as you leave the air ducts dirty.

A professional air duct cleaning service can clean out the interior of the vents that run through your walls, ceilings, and floors that you can't get to on your own to remove the pet hair, dust, and other particles that blow out your vent's registers. A professional duct cleaner will use their equipment, including blowers, vacuums, and brushes to clean out the inside of your ventilation system. They will also clean out your HVAC system's internal components to remove any build-up within them that would continue to deliver debris through your ducts and into your home. This includes cleaning the HVAC's fans, motors, coils, and interior housing of your HVAC furnace or air conditioner.

Clean Walls and Baseboards

After a winter of indoor air trapped in your home and your home's furnace filtering dirt and allergens through your home, dust and dirt can collect on your interior walls and baseboards. Even though your walls are a vertical surface, you may be surprised at the amount of dust that can build up. If you look closely at your wall's surface, especially on the walls behind open doors and up by the ceiling, you may notice a fuzzy coating on your uncleaned wall surface.

Mix up a cleaning solution of equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is a good non-toxic cleaner you can use around children and pets without causing harm to them. And vinegar will kill bacteria, germs, and up to 82 percent of mold species on your home's walls. Spray the vinegar solution onto your walls and use a cleaning rag to wipe them down, rinsing the rag out with clean water as it becomes soiled. Continue this process on all the baseboards in your home.
