Do A Better Job Of Cleaning Your Carpet With These Tips

Posted on: 23 April 2018

Carpet makes a home look lovely, and it provides a plush, comforting feeling beneath your feet. However, it does have the drawback of being more difficult to keep clean than a linoleum or wood floor. Carpet holds onto dust, mold, and moisture, so you need to clean it carefully -- and often -- to keep it in good shape. Here are five tips to help you do a better job of cleaning your carpet.

Vacuum more often

Many people vacuum once a week -- if that. But in high-traffic rooms, a lot of dust and dirt can accumulate on the carpet within a few short period of time. Each time you walk over that dirt, it gets pushed deeper into the carpet. Vacuuming more often enables you to remove the grime when it's still on the surface of the carpet. Try vacuuming twice a week, or if you have pets, every other day.

Install a dehumidifier

It may sound like a weird way to keep your carpet clean, but it really helps cut down on mold, which can grow in your carpet when the air in your home is too moist. A whole-home dehumidifier coordinates with your HVAC system and sucks moisture out of your air. You won't even notice it running.

Use less water when shampooing

If you shampoo your own carpet, make sure you do not use any more water than necessary. Many carpet shampooers have a button to let you eject more water. Use this button very sparingly -- only on areas that really need a cleaning boost. When you are finished shampooing, go over the whole carpet again with only the suction feature turned on. These steps help remove more moisture from your carpet, so it does not get moldy.

Use actual carpet shampoo

Some people use vinegar or other all-natural shampoo substitutes in their carpet cleaners. But these cleaners are not always as effective as an actual carpet cleaner would be. Look for an all-natural carpet shampoo if you must use an all-natural product.

Hire a professional periodically

Even if you own a carpet shampooer and usually shampoo your own carpet, it's a good idea to hire a professional sometimes. Professional equipment is more powerful than a home carpet shampooer, so it will remove grime that would be too deeply ground into the carpet for your carpet shampooer to reach.
