3 Simple Floor Cleaning Solutions

Posted on: 25 April 2018

The flooring in your home is important for many reasons. Not only does it add appeal and function to your home, but the right flooring can increase your home's actual value. As a matter of fact, the installation of hardwood floors can add an estimated 2.5 percent to the price of your home if you decide to sell. Of course, proper care of your wood floors is essential to protect their look and value. Here are a few safe and effective DIY cleaning solutions you can use on your hardwood floors.

Damp Mop

One of the easiest ways to clean your wood floors is with a damp mop. It is important to note that you should not apply a large amount of water to your wood floors since this can warp the wood. However, mop that is slightly damp is sufficient for removing dirt, dust, and some sticky residue.

Soak the end of your mop in a bucket of warm water. Make sure to wring out the excess liquid before placing on the floor.

Move the mop across your floors in side-sweeping motions, rinsing and wringing the mop head periodically through the process.

After mopping, use a dry mop to go behind and clean up any leftover moisture that may be lingering on the wood.

Vinegar

If you have any interest in natural cleaning, you probably know the benefits of vinegar. While it is antibacterial and antiviral, vinegar is also capable of eating through heavy dirt and stubborn residue on your floors without harming the underlying wood surface.

To use on your hardwoods, add 2 cups of warm water and 2 cups of white vinegar to a spray bottle. Shake the bottle to mix before spraying on the mopping pad. If preferred, spray the solution directly onto your hardwood floors and work a wet mop over the wood immediately after.

Tea Bags

While surprising to hear, tea bags can also be used to clean your wood floors. Tea contains tannic acid, which can remove dirt and residue while brightening your wood finish.

To use, allow a few tea bags to steep in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes. Pour the tea into a bucket and soak a cloth in the tea. Wring out the cloth's excess liquid and use to hand wash your hardwood floors.

Because the cloth is not wet, only damp, you will not need to use a wet mop after hand washing with the tea-infused cloth.

Cleaning your hardwoods the right way is an essential part of maintenance. These simple floor cleaning solutions will ensure your wood floors are clean and appealing.
