How To Get Wine Stains Out Of Carpet

Posted on: 27 April 2018

You are in the middle of a party or a cozy dinner and somebody bumps into another. Horror of horrors, some wine spills on your precious white carpet. What do you do, now?

Don't worry. If you act quickly, you can still salvage your carpet. Here's how:

Using Baking Soda

If still fresh, blot out the liquid with absorbent paper napkins. Splash a little water on the stain to further dilute the wine and blot out a little more of the liquid.

Mix baking soda with water at a ratio of 3:1. Apply it on the spot and leave it to dry. This may take a while, on average three to four hours. Once dry, vacuum the spot.

Using Vinegar

First, blot out the stain as well as you can using paper towels. Pour 32 ounces of tap water into a bowl. Add a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Use a soft cloth to gently blot the stain. Blot out the stain until completely removed.

Using Hydrogen Peroxide

This method is particularly recommended for white carpets. Mix clear hand washing liquid detergent with hydrogen peroxide at the ratio of two parts hydrogen peroxide to one part water.

Dip a sponge into the mixture and dab the stain with it. Blot out the liquid then rinse.

Before you use this method on colored carpet, test a hidden section of the carpet to ensure the color will not run. If you cannot attend to the stain immediately, put a little salt on it. This will absorb some of the wine and stop it from seeping deeper into the carpet until you are ready to clean it.

Dry Stain

Sometimes, you may not notice the spillage until much later, until the stain has dried. In that case, you'll need to first wet the stain with hot water. Next, apply a pre-treatment product followed by an oxi product. The stain should clear within two to ten hours.

In case of a wine spill on your carpet, you don't need to look far. You can remove the stain yourself using products that are readily available in your home: Baking soda, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide.

However, tougher stains may require professional attention. If you don't get the results you expected, or if you don't want to take a risk with your carpet, hire professional carpet cleaning services, such as Go Green Carpet Cleaning, to do the job for you.
