4 Tips To Keep Your New Residential Cleaning Service Happy

Posted on: 25 October 2022

If life has gotten so busy that your house is perpetually cluttered, you may be looking into hiring a cleaning service for a one-time deep clean or regular maintenance. If you've never had outside help in your home for cleaning, it's a good idea to compare different companies' policies. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with cleaning service etiquette so that your housekeeper has a good experience. Here are four tips to keep in mind.

Go Over an Itemized List Beforehand

It goes without saying, but every cleaning service is different. One company may include tasks like window washing or laundry in a standard cleaning fee, while others may charge you extra. Instead of making assumptions about what a standard or deep clean entails, it's a good idea to spend some time going over an itemized list of expected duties. This process will keep both you and the housekeeper happy since you both won't be surprised about what is or isn't expected. This itemized process may be lengthy at first, but once you've had the cleaning service visit your home for some time, the company will have itemized invoices that you can easily refer back to so that you aren't always having to keep track of specialty services, deep cleans, or seasonal services.

Do the little Tasks so that the Cleaning Service Can Focus on Larger Issues

If you want the cleaning service to focus on vacuuming, sweeping, or dusting baseboards, it's a good idea to put away clothes or pick up toys off the floor so that the cleaner is able to get to your desired tasks. Keep in mind that many cleaners aren't supposed to lift heavy pieces of furniture for liability reasons, so if you expect an area to be cleaned—like under a couch—have a friend or family member help you move it before the cleaner arrives.

Secure Any Pets

Many cleaning services are happy to clean out litter boxes, scoop the yard, wash pet bedding, etc. But they don't want to deal directly with pets—even if they are friendly. A pet is a distraction and could accidentally get in the way and/or injure the cleaner. In nice weather, you may want to keep your pets outside in a fenced-in, shady area while the cleaning service is at your residence. You could also schedule grooming appointments or day-boarding for your pets while the cleaning service is at your house.

Consider Leaving a Tip

There are no hard rules about tipping, but in general, it's a great gesture to tip if you can since many home cleaners rely on their tips. Again, each cleaning service is different, so you should ask about their policies. In general, a $10 to $20 tip is a good range for one cleaning session. If you decide to hire a cleaner full-time, then instead of tipping after each session, you may want to tip them at the end of the year during the holiday season.
